Is Zanzibar dangerous?

Is Zanzibar dangerous?

Many people wonder if Zanzibar is dangerous, and we can start this entry from blog telling you that no, Zanzibar is not dangerous and that you will enjoy it very much. It is true that as in many cities, islands and countries there are always some places or areas that unfortunately are best avoided if you are not a local, but in general Zanzibar is not dangerous.

The currency used in Zanzibar is the Tanzanian Shilling (TZS), which is also used on the mainland of Tanzania. However, on the island of Zanzibar, the Euro is widely accepted in most tourist places.

Safety on Zanzibar Island

Zanzibar is an archipelago that is part of Tanzania. As we have said, in Tanzania for example, it is necessary to avoid some areas, but in Zanzibar Island it is very safe to move around.

In the web page of the government of Spain they always give you the advice and recommendations if there is any conflict that can develop conflicts or any danger, but nowadays it is totally safe to travel to Zanzibar. However, we recommend that you always visit this page to know the current status of the situation of the island and country.

You must keep in mind that Zanzibar lives more and more from tourism, therefore tourists are something very precious for the locals and they do their best to protect them. You may read about possible robberies or scams, but as a tourist that can happen anywhere in the world, even in the city of Madrid or Barcelona. Just be careful and that's it.

Danger in Zanzibar - What to Avoid

  • As we have mentioned, there is no specific place that is dangerous in Zanzibar, everything is suitable for tourists and you will be treated very well. Some people recommend not to stay in the capital, Stone Town, which is undoubtedly an important stop for its old town, as it is a World Heritage Site, but it is better not to choose this place as a permanent accommodation.
Do you want to know more activities in Zanzibar?

On the island of Zanzibar you can enjoy an infinity of activities that will make you enjoy everything the island has to offer to the fullest.

Safety in Zanzibar for women travel only

As for women traveling alone, sadly there are some countries where it is not very safe or recommended to travel alone, but this is not the case of Zanzibar, as this archipelago is a suitable and amazing destination for women traveling alone. And of course, it is possible that some men will approach you, as in many places, but your refusal will be respected and nothing will happen to you.

Remember that the main religion on this island is Islam, so some of its customs will have to be followed. We can go in swimsuit and bikini on the beach, but in the villages it is better to wear clothes that cover more than the bikini or swimsuits.

In short, Zanzibar is not dangerous, just, as in the rest of the world, travel with common sense and respect, that's all.

Enjoy Zanzibar!
